Гимназията е основана през 1852 година като класно училище, а през 1868 и при директора Маргарит Димзов прераства в гимназия. От 1893 до 1913 година се помещава в сграда на улица „Егнатия“ № 132, дело на архитекта Ернст Цилер, където днес е Тринадесета гимназия.
