От североизточна към югоизточна посока граничи съответно с лените Вестерботен, Вестернорланд, Йевлебори и Даларна, а на запад с норвежките фюлке Нор-Трьонелаг и Сьор-Трьонелаг. Територията на лена обхваща бившите историческите провинции Йемтланд и Хередален, както и части от историческите провинции Онгерманланд и Хелсингланд.
